Labour Induction acupuncture

For many years, natural methods such as exercise or eating spicy food have been recommended for women towards the end of their pregnancy as a mean to induce labour. However, in recent years, as women begin to seek out more holistic methods, acupuncture has become increasingly popular as a natural method to induce labour.

Firstly, what does it mean to induce labour? The signs of labour are signs given off by the body indicating that the body is ready for delivery. These include the widening of the cervix and contractions. For some women, these symptoms arrive shortly before their due date and for others, these symptoms arrive hours or days prior.

The goal of acupuncture is to guide your body towards the state of labour by naturally by promoting blood flow and uterine contractions as well as relieve anxiety. Specifically, it can help mothers relax their mind and prepare them for delivery.

Did you know that prenatal acupoints are on the low back, shoulders, feet and hands, NOT near the belly?

It is recommended for mothers to seek out an acupuncturist at 35 weeks of their pregnancy. The number of treatments required will depend on the individual and our acupuncturist can make a recommendation upon assessment. Treatment is typically 30 minutes long with the mother laying in a side position. After treatment, mothers can expect to feel a sense of relaxation as well as reduced anxiety.

Our acupuncturist, Zach Olesinski practices Japanese-style Acupuncture which is the most gentle form of acupuncture. This type of acupuncture utilizes a thinner needle and treatments are of shorter duration. This is particularly suitable for expecting mothers who have never tried acupuncture or who might feel anxious about the treatment itself.
