What is Sex Positive Therapy?

Many people find the discussion of sex, sexuality, and sexual desire difficult due to the judgment and stigma surrounding it. This can cause individuals to avoid exploring their true desires, negatively impact discussions in the bedroom and lead to unsafe sex practices due to a lack of knowledge. Sex Positive therapy seeks to provide barrier-free, safe spaces for the discussion of sexuality and sexual desires so individuals can get the support and information they need to safely engage in sexual behaviours with a full understanding of their personal autonomy and consent.

What is Sex Positive Therapy?

There is a difference between a Sex Positive Therapist and a Sex Therapist. Typically, individuals seek out a Sex Therapist to tackle specific sexual issues. A Sex Positive therapist takes a broader, open-minded, judgment-free approach to the discussion of sexuality and can help provide guidance and support for individuals seeking to explore their relationship with sex. Sex Positive therapy looks at sexuality as a natural part of human life and embraces a wide range of sexual desires, orientations and kinks. A sex-positive therapist will create a judgment-free, empathetic, inclusive, safe space during a session for the discussion of sexuality, sexual desires and kinks. The goal is to empower clients to make the right decisions for themselves and their bodies, instilling self-acceptance, self-love and self-confidence while removing personal judgment. Sex Positive therapists are a valuable resource for advice and knowledge, allowing you to engage in your kinks and sexual desires safely. Sex Positive Therapy is focused on removing the taboo from sex talk, allowing for important conversations to take place that allow individuals not only to better understand their sexual desires but also how to safely engage with the desires of others.

Who Should See a Sex-Positive Therapist?

Sex Positive therapy is a valuable resource for anyone. It can be specifically helpful for those overcoming feelings of shame or fear around sex and sexuality, those with kink or sex-related trauma, and individuals looking to gain intimacy communication skills. Sexual shame and trauma are not uncommon and can often colour an individual’s approach to sex and sexuality, causing them to hold back from exploring their true desires out of fear of stigma and judgment. Sex-positive therapy creates a healing space for these individuals, allowing for a safe, judgment-free discussion of sex and sexuality. It can be especially helpful for those with more unique relationship dynamics (such as people with a BDSM lifestyle or polyamorous couples). For those whose desires fall outside of what society deems the “norm” (i.e. hetero, single partner relationships) sex-positive therapy provides an inclusive and accepting space for the discussion of alternative lifestyle choices and desires. Anyone with a desire to further explore their sexuality who doesn’t know where to start or simply wants to improve their communication skills and understanding of consent in sexual situations can benefit from the expertise and knowledge of a sex-positive therapist.
