Acupuncture for Men’s Health

Today, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is widely recognized for its positive impact in addressing an array of issues, including mental health, physical injuries, digestive issues, and pain relief. While there has been considerable attention on women’s health and fertility, Movember provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the benefits men can take from TCM and acupuncture.

Men specific issues that TCM can help with:

  • Mental health

  • Infertility

  • Erectile dysfunction or impotence

  • Premature ejaculation

  • Low libido

  • Prostatitis

  • Andropause

  • Support the body when starting to start a family. It is important to note that men play a crucial role in fertility health alongside women.

In TCM, there is a saying that “Women are ruled by Blood, and men are ruled by Qi”. Qi is the vital energy that fuels bodily functions. Qi can be underactive, blocked or travel in the wrong direction. These can manifest as fatigue, shortness of breath, general pain, gassiness, even vomiting and hiccupping. Amongst the organs, the Kidney being the powerhouse of Qi, is of particular importance when treating men’s health. It is by supporting the Kidney functions that a man’s journey to better health starts.

According to the CDC, the second most common reason for death in men under 45 years of age is suicide, the leading cause of death in men between 45 and 85 is cancer and over 85 is heart disease. TCM nurtures “yangsheng”, meaning “nourishing life”, in other words self-preservation, self-cultivation. Self-care is not gender or age specific. For a good functioning society we need our men strong and healthy.

Acupuncture offers a range of points that the practitioners can use often extending beyond the immediate affected region. In fact, points further away from the affected region often have shown to be more efficacious than local points. It is worth mentioning that the needle may indeed be positioned away from the genital region, especially for individuals who prefer to avoid that area.
