Hypnotherapy For Birthing
Do you struggle with anxious thoughts about giving birth? You are not alone. This is a very intense experience that can be painful and daunting. There are a few different ways expecting mothers can prepare for childbirth. One very interesting method would be through hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy guides individuals into an extremely relaxed state allowing them to concentrate on a specific topic without external distractions. A hypnotherapist will use words or imagery to change thought patterns, which can manifest in daily life as positive behavioural changes or health improvements. This can be beneficial in many ways, like breaking negative habits, improving mental health, and helping to treat medical issues.
Hypnotherapy can also change the way the body responds to emotions, this is a large part in how it can help expectant mothers throughout their delivery. With hypnotherapy, also known as hypnobirthing, a pregnant person can bring their body into a state of relaxation, making the birthing process easier and more comfortable. Many people are attracted to hypnobirthing because it is a medication free form of pain management and stress relief. It has also been shown to shorten labour, reduce the chances of a c-section, support mothers through postpartum and result in higher infant Apgar scores.
So how does it work? The pregnant person will prepare ahead of time through one on one sessions with a hypnotherapist or hypnobirthing specialist. The specialist will share with the patient various techniques to practice in the time leading up to labour. Some of these practices include deep breathing exercises, visualization, affirmations or hypnosis scripts, eye-cues, meditation, and new vocabulary for birthing sensations. With these tools, an expectant mother can undergo self-hypnosis during birth and experience the benefits associated with hypnobirthing.
