Bioenergetic Therapy as a Tool For Releasing Trauma

Every time you recall something stressful from the past, there is a physical reaction in your body, subtle or not. During treatment, a Bioenergetic Therapist will be able to detect that reaction through muscle monitoring. They will then proceed to locate the energetic blockage created by the stress and find the appropriate technique to remove it.

The amygdala in our brain is where emotional evaluation happens and where the link between trauma and our physical response is formed. When it comes to trauma, events such as the passing of a loved one or an injury incurred in an accident may come to mind. However, trauma can be caused by smaller events that register differently in our subconscious. For example, choking on a fish bone and losing the ability to breathe for two seconds can be registered as trauma in the subconscious. The amygdala then associates fish (what is seen as the source of the trauma) with losing the ability to breathe (the physical response). A new protective mechanism is developed so that every time you see a fish, you feel nauseous or experience an allergic reaction. It is one of the many ways our body tries to protect us from repeating a traumatic event. Unfortunately, often these links do not serve us and can even hinder our personal growth. Complex conditions such as PTSD, anxiety and phobias are seen as the result of an overactive amygdala.

Nutrition and diet are very important for anybody suffering from mental health issues as your gut and brain are absolutely interlinked. A drop in blood sugar levels and a poor diet can trigger anxiety faster and cause stress responses in your body. Therefore, a Bioenergetic Therapist will also try to identify stressors in your diet through muscle testing and will figure out if supplementation is needed to boost your systems. One of the most useful supplements for most people is magnesium as this nutrient gets depleted most easily in stressful situations, resulting in sleep issues, muscle pain and tension, skin conditions, digestive problems and more!

Bioenergetic Therapy aims to break such links, or in other words, remove the physical reaction to the object or stressful thought so that it no longer has power over us. This does not mean that you lose the memory, but rather, that there is no emotional charge when you think about it.

A Bioenergetic Therapy session will begin by focusing on gently shifting your body into a relaxed, parasympathetic state in which sympathetic stress pathways are intentionally activated (by having you think about a source of stress or move an area of the body that has been causing chronic pain). Clients normally feel a sense of ease during correction and can find it difficult to focus on negative emotions as they become blurry. The source of their stress becomes more neutral on an energetic level.

Generally, emotional work is like peeling an onion, with new layers appearing once you have treated the prior ones. However, in Bioenergetic Therapy, we can always muscle tests to check in with the body and see where to start and where to go next.
